England and Welsh Drawn in the Same Group for the 2027 World Cup in Australia

The pool stage draw was overseen by sporting legends including former All Black Dan Carter.

The English side and Wales have been drawn in an identical group for the World Cup in 2027, setting up a highly-anticipated early clash in Australia. They are joined in Pool F by Tonga and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw mirrors their memorable meeting in the group phase of the 2015 World Cup, where Wales' victory at Twickenham contributed to the hosts' surprise early exit.

Key Pool Pairings

The Irish and Scotland have likewise been drawn in a pool once again, replicating the situation from the 2023 edition. In that tournament, they claimed a convincing win, with their opponents unable to advance to the quarter-finals.

Los Teros and Portugal, who each impressed as underdogs in the last World Cup, round out that same group.

Notably, the winners of these two groups cannot meet defending champions and world number one South Africa before the final, assuming the South Africans top their assigned pool.

Tournament Ramifications

Should the groups play out according to the current global standings, other leading contenders like New Zealand and Les Bleus would remain separated from the likes of England and the Irish all the way to the final.

Under those circumstances, Argentina would be the remaining top-ranked nation on that side of the elimination bracket as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Face Blockbuster Opener

Hosts Australia find themselves alongside their trans-Tasman rivals and triple champions New Zealand in Group A.

The Wallabies will kick off the tournament in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a blockbuster fixture designed to jump-start the competition.

In other groups, holders the Springboks have been paired with the Azzurri, Georgia and the Oaks. France are in a pool with Japan, 2031 hosts the United States and Manu Samoa.

Expanded Tournament for 2027

Argentina will face Fiji, Los Leones and Canada as the World Cup grows to twenty-four nations from the 20 who took part in 2023.

The 2027 tournament will feature a last-16 stage for the first time in the competition's existence.

Although the victor of England and Wales's group may be kept apart from some of the game's heavyweights early on, they will have to face the runner-up from Pool B – most likely the Italians – in the last 16.

Four of the remaining six pool winners will face a team that finished third from the pool stages.
