The US Justice Department has officially joined a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to prevent the California's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This court case, filed in a US district court, challenges the map championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on civil rights and undermines the democratic process," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will withstand court challenges.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," commented a representative for the governor.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit claims that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to heavily favor Latino communities in contravention of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," argued a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation constitutes the major response by the Democratic party in the continuing redistricting war that started with Texas and has extended to multiple states.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required voter approval, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to gain just a handful of Republican-held House seats to take control of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the majority will influence the final years of the current administration, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its political program or encounter opposition, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
